There is no question that contributions from volunteers greatly enhance our communities and our state, but our volunteers don't get nearly enough recognition. The Governor's Volunteer Awards program was designed to give organizations an easy, cost-effective way to honor their volunteers with a prestigious, once-in-a-lifetime award. Since 1982 state agencies have been recognizing their outstanding and dedicated volunteers with this award. However, cities have only had this opportunity for the past five years.
Volunteers may be selected for an award in one of three categories: Individual; Group; or Length of Service. Each year, regional award presentation ceremonies are held across Iowa to recognize and thank hundreds of volunteers for the commitment, service and time that they donate to cities in Iowa, state government agencies and nonprofit organizations.
To learn more about the award, visit the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Services' Web site at www.volunteeriowa.org/awards.
Applications and the $15 nomination fee are due to the League by April 16. Contact Bethany Duncan at (515) 244-7282 or bethanyduncan@iowaleague.org with questions.
Only people or groups who volunteer their time with a city are eligible to receive a Governor's Volunteer Award submitted through the Iowa League of Cities. Award recipient criteria include an individual or group who has:
To help you select your "Super Star" volunteers for this once-in-a-lifetime award, think about their contribution to the city. What were the benefits of the nominee's efforts? What makes the accomplishments of this nominee more significant than all other volunteers? How many hours were contributed by the volunteer to the agency/organization?
Cities have had a lot of volunteers to thank in the brief amount of time the award has been available for cities to bestow:
